Gauge Steel
Location: SE corner of Jefferson Ave. & St. Louis St.
This series was inspired by the artists’ reflections on how to move forward after loss and the disorienting and paralyzing experience that comes with intense grief. The glass in these works function as conceptual lenses made of kiln-formed glass within which are embedded: navigational tools and related imagery such as compasses, and maps. These “compasses” are mounted on curved steel pipes, bending in a way that implies that they are moving at great speed and also balanced on a precarious, cast-iron wheel. The implication is that none of these traditional modes of finding ones way will be useful in this new sense of place, where everything the ground is continually shifting and out of level, as though the laws of physics seem altered. These works are an expression of what it might feel like to move through this new, strange world.
