Sculptor Joan Benefiel is inspired by the spark of magic that happens when the expressive power of the human form meets her favorite mediums. She is currently working with the most cutting edge luminous resin that captures and holds light in a transfixing way. She has developed a unique production process that makes her sculptures look as if they might have been carved directly out of light.
Joan received her first monumental public art commission in 2004. Primarily self-taught up to that point, she was accepted to the MFA program for figurative sculpture at the New York Academy of Art that same year.
Her vibrant, dynamic work has been commissioned for a variety of public art installations and her signature resin sculptures are included in numerous private collections. Rounding out her formal sculpture training with more than a decade of working in bronze art foundries, Joan founded her own sculpture production company, Figuration Studio, in 2008.
