Stainless Steel

Location: SE Corner of Kimbrough Ave. and Cherry St.

I have designed a labyrinth based on a fingerprint to serve viewers as a metaphor of our individual journeys through life. This image will be sandblasted and painted on both sides of a stainless-steel plate which will be mounted on a stainless pipe and base plate that can be secured into concrete with anchor bolts. The stainless will be burnished to create a random-textured surface that reflects light from several angles at once. The sandblasted lines will create a path for fingertips to follow one of 3 routes to the center of the design. This is not a maze, though it may resemble one to some people. Once a person is on a path, it will lead them to the center—there is no frustration from reaching a dead end.

My first iteration of this concept was the large Bolivian Odyssey, located at Ars.Natura.Uta in Achocallo, Bolivia, near La Paz. Built in collaboration with Teresa Camacho-Hull, it’s a permanent installation of stone and grasses with a small reflecting pool and a very large sculptural eucalyptus root at the center.
